The Best Way to Meet New People, Hands Down

If you were to ask fifty people what the best way to meet new people is, you'd probably get fifty different answers. And normally, I'd say that all those fifty people are right, if we were talking about good ways to meet new people. However, if we're talking about the best way, there is a correct answer to this one. Allow me to explain.

The key is to go out and enjoy yourself! It really doesn't matter what you do. Take art lessons, go to the gym, sign up for an interest class, learn a new skill... anything! Just get out of your house and have some fun where there's other people having fun too. If you happen to see somebody you'd like to meet, great! Start a conversation, you've already got something in common; the activity you're doing! If you meet somebody at your pottery class, then you already know that pottery is a mutual interest you have. This creates an instant conversation, and can lead to some really great friendships, or more, who knows?

If you're at spin class, make a comment to the person next to you, "Man, the instructor's really killing us today! This is the best workout I've had in a while" or whatever makes sense in the situation. If you're sitting in class at school, you can say "The material is really interesting, but this professor's voice is like Ambien for students!" or maybe "I love this lecture hall, it's got the best seats on campus! Great for napping." You've got a billion different reasons to start up a conversation, now do it!

If you're nervous about talking to people, realise that you don't need to make this a full fledged dialogue, you can easily just make a comment, smile, and move away, or pay attention to something else. Don't worry! Just because you start speaking to someone, doesn't mean you are henceforth obligated to go right through and attempt to get their number.

The beauty of this simple method is that even if you don't meet somebody, who cares? You're out having a good time anyway! You got your workout in, you learned how to paint still-life portraits, and you can now say that you've officially earned your white belt in karate. Whatever you did, there's a reason you did it, and it wasn't just to meet new people. So if you didn't meet somebody, it doesn't matter! There's no disappointment, no discouragement, only positive feelings; and this will encourage you to go out and do it again until you do meet new people.

You can apply this idea to just about anything you do! Standing in line at the bank, looking for a particular brand of cookies at the grocery store, whatever you're doing, chances are there's other people doing the same thing, and that's a perfect excuse to start up a conversation. If you think it's going well, and would like to have another conversation with this person, don't forget to introduce yourself! And make up an excuse for them to see you again (which if you're taking some kind of lessons is perfect, because you'll probably see them every week!). People are creatures of habit, if you've seen somebody at the gym a few times, chances are you'll see them there again, and usually during the same time period too.

If you're out and about and having fun, that in of itself will help you to meet new people. Good moods and enthusiasm are noticeable, and very attractive. Remember though that this is only the best way to meet new people, there are plenty of other very excellent ways as well, such as online dating.
